I’ve illustrated trade books, mass market, educational and religious illustrations for books, magazines, auxiliary educational materials, and posters starting in the early 80’s…Licensing my art started later – around 2010. I graduated from CSU with a degree in art education and illustration and earned my master’s degree in studio art/illustration from Marywood University. Although most of my illustrations were for the educational market, I’ve been a member of SCBWI (Society of Children’s Book and Writers) both in New York and Colorado for decades – including being the Illustrator coordinator for RMC of SCBWI for five years (2010 – 2015). I love public speaking, teaching and sharing what I’ve learned and experienced as an illustrator with civic groups, schools and universities.
The first book I was hired to illustrate was called Barefoot Bear Plays Ball, written by Richard L. Eyster and published by Tern Enterprises Inc.in 1985. At that point I quit my job working as an art therapist/teacher at E.N.T.E.R. (Ecumenical Narcotics Treatment for Effective Rehabilitation) in Harlem, New York and pursued my freelance career full time. Life has been an adventure in freelancing since that date! Because I made every effort to do culturally diverse illustrations from the beginning of my career, I earned a reputation for being someone that would create work that was well researched with honest portrayals of visual information that was reliable. I also participated in writers’ groups to hone my writing skills for children starting in the 80’s thanks to my participation in the lectures and classes offered by SCBWI. It hasn’t been an easy journey, but it is always challenging and fulfilling. I’m honored to have this career and am grateful for all the illustrators and writers I’ve learned from throughout my life.
